I am currently an undergraduate psych major. The course i am taking has two research reports, one due in the middle of the semester and one at the end. So there are two grades total and that's all that counts toward your final grade (50/50). Do you find that unfair? Two opportunities for grades. I'm just really frustrated with it and was wondering if you thought this was a valid frustration. Thanks.

Very fair!

If you don't like it, audit the course!

I've had classes in which everything rested on the final exam or on one paper, so this is at least twice as fair! At least with a paper you have the opportunity to hone it so that you know it is reasonably good. With an exam, you can have one bad day and blow the whole semester.

Having said that, I really don't like it much. I know that in one of the classes I taught this semester there were 27 separate assignments, and in the other there were there were 17.

Sounds good, for one class I have to write four 10-15 page papers worth only 10%, six mini assignments 1-2 pages worth 10% in total and an exam worth 50%. I'd much rather have to write just one paper and one exam! Your class sounds good like an easy A!

Of course this is a fair way of grading a class. I probably had more classes in college that were that way opposed to the style of homework, quizzes, and exams. It's better that they are papers than just two tests, don't you think?

I don't consider it unfair. The prof. can set whatever rules he/she wants.
I had a class once where the professor said the final exam would comprise 100% of one's grade. If you had a "D" average on tests and then happen to score an "A" on the final, you win BIG!

A lot of my psychology classes are like that. I don't like it but, thats the way it is!!! On the other hand my criminal justice classes just have a midterm test and a final test.. NO papers.. I would rather write a paper and have a better chance.. I'm a bad test taker..

That is a standard type way of college grading. It is very fair as each one is 50% so together that makes 100% of your grade and it is less difficult this way.

It's very much fair. If you want to be at ease, ask the prof if you can see past papers on what they consider to be representative of quality work. You can then see what their expectations are.

No. I don't even think four grades in college is fair. I miss high school when you could just turn in a sloppy mess and get at least a "c". Those were the days.
