It's really a question of finances. If you can afford to stay at a luxurious hotel, this is often your best option.
Typically, the best rule of thumb is to use your length of stay: for a single night or two, a motel is cheap and the place where you can get some sleep and hit the road the next day. If you're staying for a week or two, the comforts of a hotel would be better appreciated. For a month, or if you're travelling extensively through an area (like backpacking through Europe), a hostel will rarely be quiet but will give you the best taste of an area which to many is one of the great rewards of travelling.
Another option for when you're planning on visiting a certain place for a couple of weeks or so you may consider renting a loft or small short-term apartment. This is cheaper than staying in a hotel and will offer the most privacy.

Instead of hotels or motels, you can always try a hostel. There are two located in the city of Boston, one is called HI Boston and the other is HI Boston at Fenway. Hostels are super cheap since you're really only paying for a bed to sleep in. The ones in Boston range from $25 - $35 for just a bed or about $80 for a private room. I stayed in hostels on a 2 week trip to Scotland and let me tell you, they are great places. Don't listen to people when they say they are dirty and dangerous. The only people that stay in hostels are people just like you - young travelers looking for a place to sleep for the night. If you're worried about security then put a lock on your bag but you probably won't need it. I put the Hostelling International USA website below with those hostels listed so you can check them out and see all the amenities they provide. Have a great time in Boston! EDIT - Yeah, I so read the question wrong, I thought you said "HOTELS" and not hostels. But anyway, I'm keeping my answer as is. lol.

Motels as they are cheap and comfortable. I've no experience of hostels though I lived in Hostels for 4 years during my engineering. Tourists can stay in a hostel is news to me,

My son has been doing a lot of traveling lately in Europe, and he prefers Hostels because, according to him they are cheaper, but just as good quality as a higher priced hotel, and for a few Euros more, you can have a private room.

Mainly hotels, though I did do a Best Western Motel by Yosemite a few years back, and it was a bit basic, but not bad. I don't really need much, just a bed and breakfast usually.
