I have XP sp2, and can't find my cd/dvd drive anywhere. It won't open, no lights come on. I'd download an updated driver, but since I can't figure out what I have it makes it hard. Could it be dead?

With your pc off, check that the power connector to the drive is properly seated. If possible, use another connector.

If the LED on the drive is not lighted up and you can not even eject the tray, then the drive is dead.

If you can't see it on the computer and it doesn't respond physically, there is a hardware issue. If the drive is removable, pull it out and check for obvious signs of damage. If it looks okay, put it back in until it clicks into place. Then restart your computer.

restart your computer for one... see if that works. other than that go to your control panel and click add new hardware and see if you can't do it from there. You can shut down your computer, unplug the drive completly, then wait 30 secs. and then plug it all back in... then start the computer and see if registers.
