I have used Toyostove Kerosene heater for many years to supply extra heat in the winter. I simply wouldn't ever want to be without it because of the wonderful heat it gives. It cuts my house heat in half each year. I was wondering how prevalent they are and how many other people use them as a means of supplementary heat, or emergency heat if the power goes out. Do you own and use one? Do you like it? does it save on your heating bills as it does on mine? Just wondering.

Beware of carbon monoxide. Anything that burns fuel emits fumes that can kill you. Every winter I read about deaths from kerosene heaters so please be careful. . .

I've got a very good portable heater that looks like a radiator. It works like one, too. It's quite effective and electric, With kerosene you've got fire and fumes and liquid fuel. You're supposed to open a window to run one-kinda defeats the purpose.

They may give "wonderful heat" but, they are also dangerous. In the Pacific Northwest last year over 44 people lost their lives to carbon monoxide gas. A silent and deadly killer among those like you who are outguessed by the heat.
These are made for an open area use, not a closed in space like a room and, certainly not for extended use.

Your playing a dangerous game here.

The biggest problem of using hydrocarbon liquid fuel ( kerosene ) is that for every gallon burnt, it produces i.i gallons of WATER into your house, not very good for the quality of the air in your home.
I find that there is an odor produced which annoys me.
The other factor to be taken into account is that there is going to be a reduction in the oxygen in the house as well.
I would say that they are great for a power outage ONLY.

Yes I use one but only if we lose power. I'd be lost without it. We did use one on a regular basis years ago but It urned my ceilings all yellow so didn't use it as much after that.

I don't like the idea of burning any liquid fuel unvented inside my house. I would feel better using an unvented propane heater.
