like McDonald's, Taco Bell or Target. I'm writing a novel and I mention a few companies. Will I have to pay them roalities or whatever? thanks

No. You can do pretty much what you want there unless it is slanderous or otherwise badmouths them.

I'm not a lawyer, but you shouldn't have to. (Does Stephen King pay every brand name he mentions in his books?) After all, many companies have become part of the ambience! If you speak negatively of a company, you may have trouble on your hands, but otherwise the mention is free advertising.
