no. we measure ourselves against celebs and tear them down and put them on a pedestal. many cannot take it.

I think that could be a valid point. Sometimes people just need to escape reality.
I never used to read celebrity news. However, I started reading the celeb news at work during my lunch hour. I work at a university giving classes so it was nice to read some "mush" for a change and not some research proposal, assignment, etc. Now I find myself reading it every lunch hour. Not that I care, just a habit and often a good laugh.

i think it's a perfectly valid explanation. a lot of experts credit it to the fact that the media industry, for years now, has created a new concept of news (celebrity-focused) which is now more readily acceptable in society than, as you mentioned, news about war or local stories. it's all around us, so it's hard not to listen and get involved.
i once read a reporter's quote which compared celebrity news to watching a car crash: you don't really wanna see it, but you can't help yourself; you're always going to slow down to see what you can see at the scene, ya know?

Could be. "Escapism Entertainment" -has always been pretty popular in many Countries- and most people find their OWN Lives reality ENOUGH, so that they're really NOT interested in any more "Reality"- from the News. When you don't know how to deal with something, -news of Paris Hilton starts sounding pretty good... :)

Isn't the news about celebrities usually bad, anyway?
People that like it probably like it because it is more dramatic and easier to understand than the latest tax reform.

Bad news, at least the good news may make the bad news a little better

neh. the people i know who keep up with celebrity "news" don't even watch local news...and so they never stopped watching real news as they never watched news in the first place.
futhermore, people that care about celebrity news tend to only care about the BAD celebrity news--you know, something like schadenfreude
