My friend has a "system".... if the baby is truly "cute" or "adorable" she says so. If the baby is less than cute or adorable, she says "Your baby is precious." That way, no one's feelings get hurt........and new mom doesn't hurt YOU! You know those post partum hormones can be a biatch!!

Well then get your butt down to Crete. You can actually be stigmatised for life if you look at somebodies baby and call it 'cute' or 'beautiful'. Cretans (lol) seem to think that giving a baby compliments puts the evil eye on them. So when you see a baby you literally say 'isn't that the ugliest mutt you've ever seen?'. But in a fond voice of course. I found out the hard way. I've got green eyes, so now I'm known as the Eye curser. I have to yell insults at every baby/woman I meet just to cover my back. True story.

All newborns are ugly if born through a natural birth. I mean come on think about the process of birth of course they are going to be ugly.
Sometimes c-section babies are not so ugly looking.
I am at disadvantage as well because not only are they most likely ugly but they are incredibly boring.
"Oh wow it is a sleeping, football head...yippie"
I usually ignore newborns. A friend of mine came over to my house with her newborn one day. She tells me "The baby is in the car seat"
My response was "That's nice, you can put it over there" (referring to the corner of the room)
She was shocked when she realized I did not want to take it out and hold it.
My thought was I thought she came over to play cards not to stare at a sleeping baby...or better yet wake it up and listen to it scream.
These are usually times my family spends a few minutes talking to outsiders about how "Kathy has a twinge of Aspergers"

My brother called his son lumphead for about the first 6 months of his life -- he was an odd looking baby. I however, still thought he was cute because he was a BABY! I think all babies are cute -- simply because they're small, defenseless, have big eyes - makes me feel kinda protective.

Hahaha, i LOVE this question!! I soooo always want to say something like that!! I don't because I'd insult the mom to hell and back, but frankly I think babies look disgusting.

LOL.
Somehow though, I think that if you were the proud daddy and someone said your lil bub looked like a mutant hot dog - you'd flatten 'em!

I know what you mean , I would have wanted someone to let me know if one of my boys was an ugly baby . I know it would suck to hear that your baby is ugly but even ugly baby's grow up to be good looking adults , all of us go through an ugly stage at one point in life . we only hope it doesn't last.

They don't do it for obvious reasons: it makes the situation awkward for everybody, you end up looking like a jerk, and somebody gets their feelings hurt. No good can really come from it. But man... there really are some fugly ones out there.

I heard someone say what a cute little boy that was, when the mother said it was a girl -- the person replied: oh. think of the money you will save on prom dresses.
