Well as of right now i dont really know what rome is. But I do know that around the renassaince, it was an Empire because it was ruled by an emporor.

It was an empire for roughly 400 years, a republic for 300, and arguably a kingdom for 600 before then.

Until about 49 BCE it was a Republic. Then came Julius Caesar and Augustus, and ti turned into an empire.
