Assuming you actually mean megabits not megabytes: 1 byte is 8 bits, so 1 megabyte is 8 megabits. A computer sees 1,024 megabytes as 1 gigabyte, although hard drive specs sometimes define it as 1000 megabytes (that's one reason why your hard drive shows up as smaller than its rated size). So, depending on who you're talking to, a gigabyte is either 1000 or 1024 megaBYTES, 8000 or 8192 megaBITS.
