Unless you know what medium he/she uses, or what he needs, the best gift would, probably be a gift certificat to an art supply shop. You could be wasting money, purchasing the wrong type, or, even the wrong brand of art supplies.

However, if you insist on buying something that can be wrapped and presented, I like the pen and ink idea that someone else suggested. Most Illustrators passed through the pencil and pen and ink stage in thier training. A nice drawing pen (doesn't have to be an antique) and bottle of quality ink should evoke nostalgic feeling and be appreciated, even if the artist no longer works in the media.

I might suggest that, instead of a traditional drawing pen, you find a bamboo pen. It is, slightly, different, but still works much like a regular drawing pen, but with a bolder line. This could encourage your illustrator friend to experiment with a new form, if he hasn't already done this. Bamboo pens should be available at most, quality art supply stores.

If you decide that a note book, or drawing note book is your preference, then, don't go cheap or gaudy. Look for a type called "moleskin." It is a high quality product, and has been used by generations of artists and writers, who work while traveling. Moleskin books come in a variety of sizes and are available at bookstores and art supply shops.

An illustrator can never have enough notebooks. Go to Borders and look at their notebook collection. Find one with a cover in the style that your friend would like. Make it portable so your friend can carry it around everywhere he/she goes. When you give it to him/her, say that it's to capture inspiration on the go. Make sure the pages are blank. If you can find the type that holds a pen, that would be great, but not a requirement.

Depends on their preferred media but generally any type of art supplies are always appreciated - brushes, pencils, paints, drawing pads, etc.. Since I don't know their media a specific suggestion would be a nice professional portfolio case.
