my dad was at gila and he was 14. he said when they called him jap, he only knew that meant they hated him. he heard it again when he returend to school years later. jap means they hate you. that's all he understood.
ADD......"correction ameria did not have concentration camps we had refugee camps for japeneese citizen they were not mistreated or starved to death but it was still pretty ignorant and bad"
look up concentration camp. they were not refugees. my dad is american. they were not being massacred, but they were indeed mistreated. my aunt was a teenager and was repeatedly used for sex....raped. and beaten. she isn't right in the head now and i understand, she was of sound mind when she went in. she's 80 and has always been alone. she lives in her mother's house and never married or even had a boyfriend. a used girl is worthless. the rest of the family marry.

This is very interesting because it depends on what English speaking country you are in.
In the U.S. this is considered an insult. In England it is considered an insult but much less so than in the U.S. and finally in Australia it is used often and is not considered an inuslt at all.
In Japan itself it is considered an insult of course.
The more common slur during wwII was Nip and that is because Japan used to be called Nippon.
It depends on your usage too. If you just mean short for Japanese woth no malice intended it would be different than some red neck referring to a Japanese car as "Jap Crap" which would be highly derogatory.

I'm pretty sure it is a racial slur to call a Japanese person a "Jap." It's just like calling a Korean person a "G ook" or a Chinese person a "Chink" or a German a "Kraut" and the list goes on...they don't like it and I'm sure you won't like being called a certain word to describe your ethnicity. I'm Korean and I get confused with the other asians all the time, but it's OK, as long as I don't get called a certain name based on my ethnicity =/

It's not equivalent to it, but it's still unpleasant. I wouldn't use it if I was you, saying "Japanese" only takes a little more time. Also, Dearenemy, during World War 2 the Japanese in the United States were put in concentration camps, so perhaps you're the one who needs to re-read some history books.

Japanese consider the reference to them as "Jap" as derogatory.
If your friend is Japanese, call him or her Japanese. There is nothing as too much respect when you're dealing with a Japanese.
Answer to your ending question : Yes. They are just *much* less vocal about it, but you can be sure they hate it as much as an African American hates you for calling them the n-word.

It just depends upon the person. Some black people are offended by the ''n-word'', and some aren't. The same applies to Japanese and ''jap''- Some are offended by it, and some aren't. When in doubt, just be respectful enough to not say it.

I agree with $0.02 that if you're using Jap as an abbreviated for of Japaneses it's not big deal. No more offensive than calling a Jewish person a Jew. Ya know?

Tough one, and very similar to when you refer to a Jewish person as a Jew, it really is merely a shortened version of the respective word. It is possible for people to take offense to either as they are both used in a derogatory way. I'd play it safe and call them Japanese.

assuming Jap is simply short for Jap-anese i dont see the problem. I also dont see the big deal about the transliteration of the latin "*****" to form the infamous n-word.
however, "wetbakk" thats another story .. lol.
