I think in native american mythology thry're supposed to be messengers for the spirit world.

Each myth and story changes as it passes through the generations. Even dedicated story-tellers tend to emphasize certain aspects of a tale, which might not seem important at the time, but as the generations pass, the mythos of the story reacts to the changes.
Many versions and legends about the crow (birds are a favorite myth animal, that whole flight ability translates easily into a neat metaphor.) Bird of wisdom, bird of revenge, bird of death, bird of cruelty (or the ability to overcome such) bird of message (sometimes gloomy, sometimes not) even bird of folly and tricks.
