Depends on the length of the story and how in depth it is. On the story I am writing, I am on draft 4, with at least three more to go. I have gotten away with only two drafts for a short story, though.

I almost never do a pre-draft. I used to when I was younger.
Now I simply write out the rough draft and polish it up in the final draft. Sometimes, I'll get an online friend to peer-edit for me.

When I am working on a term paper, I usually hand write the first draft. Then I type it out and print it. I make a lot of changes in content and the flow, and then print it again. This one I usually make some minor grammatical and spelling changes. Then print this one out to submit. So I usually do about 3 drafts.

Usually about 2-3 for a short essay, but when I write a long essay it could be 5-6.

The first draft is the rough draft. Anything after that is a revision. Do however many revisions you need to make it say what you want to say. Last one is for proofreading, mechanics, spelling, etc.

I usually do one or two rough drafts...typically less because I like to structure my writing very well from the get-go. When I get inspired to write something, it just flows...minor adjustments and typos are all that I really need to redo when I'm done.

Two is always helpful but you really only need one. English teachers have their students do a vin diagram, rough draft and then the paper. Vin diagram is where the main part is in the middle circle and you branch out with the points of interest.

it depends if its a long story (more than 2 pages) you probably should do 2 or more drafts. if its less than 2 pages u should do 2. but ofcourse this is for handwriting if you're going to type it you can just read it over and make corrections on the computer

I don't count. I am too busy concentrating on what I am writing. Naturally how many rough drafts would vary.
