I recently purchased a car, my cars front panel looks same when its switched on and when it is in standby (i.e when key is inserted). Unintentionally I have many time switched on the engine when it was already on. It makes horrible noise which scares me. Does it have any side effect on the engine? does it damage the engine?

Please give your valuable answers.

The starter drive gear tries to engage, makes contact to the
flywheel causing the grinding noise. It will wear the gear drive
on the starter as well as wear the teeth on the flywheel. I have seen a starter gear explode from this and the fragments get
caught between the flywheel and the bellhousing which knocked a hole in the bellhousing of the transmission.
So, it will definitely shorten your starter's life and could be
very expensive if your flywheel or bellhousing are effected.

It doesnt hurt the engine, but that terrible sound you hear is your starters gears getting ground right off. Dont do that anymore! You may have to replace your starter, but even worse you could damage your flywheel, and that can be a VERY expensive repair.

its supposed to damage the starter mainly and can effect the flywheel. in some newer cars eg my 300m their is and auto starger disengager system which will disable the starter when the engine is running. i would try rember it rather go about changeing the part as it usually runs 80-200 dollars and would cost about 140 or so.

The noise is the starter motor re engaging at a speed far above what it was made to do.
It could wreck the starter motor or the ring gear on the fly wheel or flex plate.

When you are trying to re-start your car, the horrible sound is the starter teeth crunching agains the flywheel teeth.

Stop doing this as the starter is easily replaced usually ($200)

but replacing the flywheel teeth is as expensive as a clutch replacement. ($1000)

Many car owners have done this I am very sure of that.

I have done this a couple of times myself in various vehicles, the noise it makes makes me stop immediately in attempting to turn the engine on again.
None of the vehicles died or needed repairs. .

Not the engine. But it does a number on the starter drive and the flywheel or flex plate. Not cheap or easy to replace either.Pay attention to what your doing. There is no excuse for doing this.

won't do anything to the engine that noise is the starter motor and the ring gear both of which you will have ground something off the teeth of but it will only be shavings nothing to worry about unless you do it a lot then you will grind teeth off

You'll strip out the starter and they are a buger-bear to replace. But also the starter will just stop working one day no matter where you're at and you'll have to fix it right then and there.

you are engaging the starter while the engine is running. dont do this .. you will damage starter and/or flywheel. to replace flywheel you have to pull the transmission out ... costly repair.
