I got a Bachelor orf Arts Degree in Communications in December 2006...Does any know if I went back to school to get a music degree, how long would it take? Would I only have to take music classes since I have taken my basics for my 1st degree? Let me know if you know! Thanks!

I think Coach knows best.

But bottom line, talk to your potential schools' administrators and they should have the best answers for you. If you are already quite knowledgeable, I'd expect you could place out of some of your required courses. (Theory diagnostic exams are rather commonplace, sometimes you can also do this with music tech and history classes as well) This would help ease the sequential courses issue that he referred to.

The second degree rules at most colleges will require that you complete all requirements for the new degree and that you complete at least 30 hours that weren't used in the first degree. All of your core classes should still be a valid core.

The timing issue is going to be this: very many music courses are sequential. Theory I-IV, Conducting after theories; Music History I-II with literature after history. Applied every semester and 8 ensembles. While you may only "need" 30-45 hours for the major - it will take more than 2 years to go through the sequence of classes.

I did this after I retired (went back for a music degree) and it took me all of three years. So I took a bunch of other classes I wanted to learn about too (International Law, Costume Design, etc...) since I didn't need a full load of music courses. Also know that most music courses are day only - no evenings.

You could work an evenings job but then the music ensembles will have concerts and rehearsals that interfere with work. It's just not a major that is conducive to working while you try to do it. It can be done though.

Talk to the chair of the music department where you want to attend - it's very doable but not as easy as taking another year of classes (as some majors) since you can't take theory IV until you take I-III etc...

Assuming you went back to the same school, you should only have to take the music classes. Should be that way anywhere, but some schools might make you take some extra crap (stuff doesn't always transfer right).
