As long as the apt owner will approve you or you have the qualifications to do it then yes you can. You should go to the leasing office on monday and request that they put you on the lease as you are now planning on living there. If not and they find out you're living there they can ask you to leave immediately no 30 days necessary.

Before the other person moved out, you should have checked to see if the lease could be assigned to you. If not, ask about getting a lease in your name so that you have some rights. Did the other tenant leave her deposit? You need to be sure you are legally covered and will not be held responsible for anything-especially any damages etc.

You should of applied for the apartment prior to you moving in. If the lease is under someone name and they have given there 30 day notice to move. You will need to go to the manager now and let them know that you are there and need to fill out the application and place the security deposit down.

Talk to the landlord - you can't just "add" your name to a lease without their permission. And you shouldn't be living there at all if your not on the lease and are over 18.

A lease is a contract between a landlord and a tenant. A contract can only be modified if BOTH parties agree to it. You can't unilaterally modify a contract, especially one you are not party to in the first place.

depends on the management. some apartments like to get all they can, so they'll regard the original tenant as breaking the lease. you'll have to sign a new lease agreement if they accept you as tenant. you might even have to pay a deposit. and of course you'll have to get utilities transferred to your name (if they're not included with the rent)
