Directv does not provide high speeed internet access. They actually contract with internet service providers like A T&T, Verizon, Qwest and Earthlink high speed internet. Each internet provider provides internet services in certain cities and states, depending on where you live. On directv website you can input your phone number and address and directv will provide you who your internet provider will be if you soon choose to sign up.

DirecTV is slower. There is a difference between bandwidth and latency. Bandwidth is how "big" your pipe is [they advertise 1mbps, 5mbps, etc]. Latency is how FAST your information gets to you. Let me explain. Who do you think will get faster home? Someone traveling on a 6-lane freeway going 20mph. Or someone traveling on a 2-lane road going 90mph? Yes, the 6-lane freeway will carry more cars, but everyone gets home much later than the few cars going on the 2-lane road. Make sense? DirecTV aka HughesNet has an inherent latency of at LEAST 500ms, which means about half a second. The connection signal has to travel to the satellite in orbit, then come back. It is a fact of simple physics. If you want to play online games, anything over 200ms will suck for you. In that situation sometimes even dial-up will have a smaller latency than satellite internet. When I used to be on dial-up years ago I'd have latency of around 150-250ms in some games. Therefore, cable internet or DSL is the way to go. I don't recommend satellite internet to anyone that does any amount of gaming whatsoever. If all you do is chat online, watch live TV or download, then you will not see a big difference between satellite and cable. Otherwise, get DSL or cable internet.
