look it up on the us gov website
i believe you have to file papers requesting a copyright. for now, put the title on the actual manuscript & mark the (c) symbol. file paperwork (there is a small fee, i'm sure).

Sorry to tell 'ya, but book titles you can't copyright. Why do you think anyone can go ahead and name their book "Red" ? Or anything, for the matter? If I wanted to write a book called Looking For Alaska, like John Green did, heck, I could do it, if I wanted! A plot of a book can, however, be copyrighted, but if every book title in the world was copyrighted, heck, it'd take a lot of time to come up with a book title for anything! You've just got to not tell anyone your title, if you don't want anyone to take it. of course, if you get it published, or send it out to any publishing companies, there's no promise it won't ever be used. Someone can see it and get an idea totally different than what your idea was, and they couldn't get in the least bit of trouble. But after all this I really want to know what the title is. I know you won't tell me, but it's killing me. x)

I think you'd have to copyright the book. There are lots of books or songs which have the same names.

I'd focus on the book not the cover if I were you.

I can understand it though. I'm writing a book......slowly.....and I walked through a bookshopand noticed a book with the same name as the one I'm writing. My heart sank for a moment as I picked it up and dreaded that somebody had stolen the idea or just had a very similar idea.

You can't copyright titles. The content is automagically copyrighted when you write it, however, titles are exempt from copyright laws. You could possibly trademark it, but that would have different rules and regulations protecting it and probably wouldn't give you the kind of protection you want.

You cannot copyright titles. You can join the Writer's Guild and register an idea, but then you'd be on strike and couldn't write. Sorry.
