Briefly I would say it is the atmosphere which selectively reflects certain wavelengths of the white light from the sun (thus blue sky) and depends on an equilibrium between the oxygen producing life on earth (plants, plankton and other chlorophyll containing life) and the carbon dioxide producing life on earth ( such as mankind and his CO2 producing activities) to keep the temperature of the atmosphere near a constant life sustaining level.
