Because they've obviously never had to work in one of these professions and they have no idea how nerve-wracking and frustrating and exhausting it can be. Some people just, plain and simple, have no compassion for others and have no ability to see beyond their own narrow viewpoint. I completely know where you're coming from! I know it's easier said than done, but try to cheer up and just feel sorry for these people. Imagine how shallow their lives must be. :)

I live in New Jersey which is, I think, the home of the rudest, snottiest, laziest cashiers, waiters etc. So I can't really comment on your question besides this: patrons get treatment which is just as bad if not worse because they aren't getting paid to be there. I am sorry that you feel the way you do. Hopefully you are nice to people and if so, you deserve to be treated nicely in return. I must say that I was in Canada a couple times and the treatment from people there is incredibly great. I was shocked at how nice people in retail and in restaurants were.. really shocked! It made me want to stay.

Some people like to talk down to people because it gives them a feeling of superiority. You and I know that type of behavior only points to the type of human being they are and their weaknesses. One of the many reasons I worked toward working for myself and now I don't have to take clients I don't like. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to politely tell some *sshole, that I won't work in some circumstances.
Used to be a waitress and a bus driver. . .and this is for the waitress that thinks there is nothing you can do. Try being creative. I've been known to trip and throw the food right in their face-only works once per restaurant but there are other things. Don't you know that old saying about never be rude to your waitress-especially the one with her thumb in your food.

Some don't intend to be cruel but just vent out their feelings on the nearest person that just happens to be the cashier or waiter. And it's nopt okay to do it but as a cashier myself I have learned to let these comments roll off my back.Just knowing I don't have to live with them is enough for me.And also they end up being my regular customers but much nicer because I just listened instead of argueing. And that made them
respect me more.

People think that the more money they have the more power they posses. As a waiter in a very recognized hotel around the world, people attempt to be disrespectful some times but the best "smack in their faces" is to show them that you have a good education and Patience to treat them. They are like spoiled kids.

It's because they are unhappy and take their anger out on easy targets. Lets face it, people in jobs like the ones you've mentioned are easy targets because they are right there trying to help. Just feel bad for the mean people. Realize that it is not directly about or because of you. It takes some time but you'll learn to deal with people like that.

It is because they think that they are better than others. Up until a few years ago, I was in the service trade. I got sick of being treated like I was a piece of garbage and when a lady told me to get her meal right now, because I was just help, I told her that it was because of people like me, she was getting a meal and maybe she had better get herself together and stop treating others like her servants. I got fired, but she did aplogize for her behavior. Sometimes, others need to be told how they are treating others so they can see for themselves that they are being rude. Good luck and God Bless

Because they know they can get away with it, and there is nothing you can do about it.
I worked as a waitress for about 5 years, and I will never go back to that sh*t job again, because of how rude the people are.

I worked in restaurants for several years, and I know just what you mean... people are rude because you're the "help" and they "deserve" the best treatment that you can possibly give, forgetting that you are human, too, and actually can possess human emotions...

they think because we are being paid to literally serve and assist them, then they are the boss of us. they somehow come to this absurd conclusion because they think that the more they buy then the more we are paid (not true for me because im a cashier in a cosmetics store - not the manager who gets the profits - i have a fixed hourly rate).
they feel they can belittle us because they feel they should control us and that it is our duty to appease their every need. if we dont do it right they reserve the right to yell, scream, *****...
man sometimes our job can really suck eh?? :)
