i have heard that if you change back to your maiden name in the middle of a divorce, it is free. otherwise it is $150 or so. does anyone have any more information about this?

It's free in the divorce because you are paying to get a legal divorce, and you can make a name change be part of that same legal action - it's not really free because you are paying for the divorce and all that goes with it (court costs and fees). If you do it separately you have to pay for whatever it costs to file with the courts for the name change.
