Go find a non profit organization that needs some help. They have the most demanding database needs of organizations sometimes and have the least amount of resources.

Volunteer with them and help them organize their database using whatever platform they use. This will give you some hands on experience that you can use on a resume.

And you will be doing something good.

you need to learn the database you are interested in administering. the best way is to learn it, inside and out, then proceed with applying for the role. real world application is worth it's weight. if you can get under an very good sr. dba, you'll gain practical experience in real world applications.
that's my best advice.
