A couple of things I think are must haves...
For during the labor, it doens't matter. you won't be comfortable and you don't want to get blood on stuff. Maybe a variety of hard candy, but you may never touch it.
But for after the baby is born and your stay in the hospital
1. A pair of your pajamas (or two- you will be bleeding)
2. Your pillows, and maybe a blanket
3. Your shower stuff (soaps, shampoo and conditioner).
4. A camera to take plenty of pictures of you and the baby. (then send your hubby home to email them or post them online)

I was hospitalized for nearly 2 weeks before I gave birth. We packed fruit, microwave popcorn and granola bars. Sometimes I needed a nosh and the cafeteria was closed.
I packed some books and a journal... I had time to kill. A brush and razor made me feel human again. I also took a framed picture of my kitties. I missed them so much.

I'd have to second the pillows, and soap and shampoo. The only other "lifesaver" for me was a deck of cards. My first labor was sooooo long, we actually played about 10 games of rummy before the contractions were distracting me from the game.

A CD player and a couple of CDs.
Other than that, a pair of slippers. I just used the hospital's nightgown--the ones they had weren't that bad for maternity and they were nursing-friendly. :)
Some hospitals now have DVD players in the room now as well, so check your hospital and perhaps take a tour before delivering.

The soap and shampoo thing is true. Definitely take your own. The bar they give you at the hospital smells nasty and it's the size of a postage stamp. Also, take a few of your favorite snacks. All they had at my hospital was fruit juice and graham crackers, and stale vending machine food. And make sure your remember socks, theirs SUCK.

Ultra thin maxi pads - the hospital will supply you with pads, but some only stock the old thick variety...not comfy on those stretched and often stitched girl parts, I'll tell you...
Also - your own pillows from home...hospital pillows are horrible...like the worst hotel pillows you've ever used.

My own soap & shampoo! The hospital stuff is nasty smelling! You want to be sweet smelling for the baby. I also loved having my own fluffy slippers & robe. Good luck!!

My own panties (the hospital's are terrible), pads ( again, horrible), jammies, aquafor for my lips, and my baby's own diapers ( my baby is allergic to what the hospital had ). Gum for my husband.
