My sump pump stopped draining water today. The motor kicks on, humming, but does not expel any water. What could be the cause? Should I try and fix it, or just get a new one?

Hi,
Could be a plug or obstruction going in or out of the pump. Also the impeller might be worn down, so replacement may be a must.
Good luck

Definitely try and fix it before thinking about getting a new one. Often these sumps stop working because there is something simple clogging it. If it's not too difficult to access, I suggest you go take a look in the pump, see if there is anything visible stopping it from draining, like stones or silt or something caught. Shouldn't be hard to fix it yourself, but if you don't see anything or can't get to it, call a handyman who can do it for cheap. Don't wait on getting it fixed, though, as the motor will burn out if it keeps trying to expel the water it can't expel.

Probably something hung up in the impellor. You will need to take it out (after unplugging) and look in the bottom of the pump. Could be a stone or something like mop strings.

if you have a sump pump it would be a good idea if it operates properly. Call in a plumber to have it looked at.
