Religious vigilantes have killed at least 40 women this year in the southern Iraqi city of Basra because of how they dressed, their mutilated bodies found with notes warning against "violating Islamic teachings," the police chief said Sunday.

Maj. Gen. Jalil Khalaf blamed sectarian groups that he said were trying to impose a strict interpretation of Islam. They dispatch patrols of motorbikes or unlicensed cars with tinted windows to accost women not wearing traditional dress and head scarves, he added.

The "religious vigilantes" are one more reason why our troops SHOULD be there.

Or maybe you don't understand the strict, fundamentalist islamics don't respect human rights.
It would be one thing to scold or chastise a woman for improper behavior but murder and mutilation? NO!

Plus, some of these radical islamics head off to other countries and look up prostitutes. That's how committed they are to their beloved islamic principles.

Seems to me since they know the bloodthirsty creeps use unlicensed cars with dark windows it shouldn't be hard to know which cars to stop.

I support the troops who are living through hell on earth.

I'm not satisfied with people taking isolated incidents to prove a point about how badly things are going. The troop surge is widely regarded as effective. Setbacks are to be expected, but the war is progressing much better than it was at the beginning of the year -- evidenced by the media's almost complete lack of reporting on the effort (unless one of our soldiers dies). When it's good news, they ignore it. When it's bad news, it's on the front page.

Nice balance.

I have been there and seen what is going on from behind a rifle. from what i have seen i think that the people don't really know any better. Iraq needs more support from other countries so the people can be better educated.

No..we turned our soldiers into policeman..we should have pounded Iraq into the sand and bulldozed one citty or town until they gave up. If we were to go to war with Iran I believe we would end up losing...we have leaders with no balls to destroy the enemy.
