What police?? We have state troopers that respond to any emergency call but there are only a few on duty at any given time and they could be on the other side of the county. Police help can be a long time coming if at all. Most people around here take care of their own problems. If someone attacks you or breaks into your home and you feel threatened you are within your rights to shoot to kill. Anyone except convicted felons are legally allowed to carry a concealed weapon, no permit needed. Funny, but we don't have a lot of home break ins or car jackings. Hmmm, I can't imagine why.

I must say that it has been some time since I saw an officer cruise my street, but the crime rate here is very low. I live in a very small city and there are only 5 police officers. I don't think that they are selective at all. You break the law, they will take necessary action. I don't personally know any of them, but I would recognize them if they were in their street clothes... and I think they would recognize me. They have my respect.

The statement under the question is pretty accurate for many rural towns around us. The Highway Patrol are absolutely wonderful but can't say that about local police and sheriff's departments. I can recall a list of unsolved murders. One was a teacher I knew. It was listed as an accident, she was well known and liked. Supposedly fell off a piece of farm equipment. The spouse is still living.
We have a lot of Meth use here. They've talked several times about adding a Federal Drug Enforcement Agency office nearby but not done it yet. It's difficult to tell who is a dirty cop and who is on the job.
When citizens have to drive to the state capitol to complain about law enforcement officials not busting obvious Meth labs, you know something isn't right.

The police in my suburban community are too busy chasing down teenage alcoholics who are starving for attention. I was stopped on a walk and accused of drinking. I had to breathe into a police officer's face to prove myself. I found it rather rude... there had been no indication that I had been drinking. I was on a normal walk, moving in a straight, coordinated line. The police eventually become as bored as the drug-addicted youth around here. They start going after anything they can just to get some action.

They do pretty good, I do wish they would write more speeding tickets. The highway though town is a 45 miles an hour speed limit. People drive 55 and 60. Sometimes more. They cut in and out of traffic. We need more police presence.

I have never had a problem with my local PD in Clovis. In neighboring Fresno, I have had lots of problems. Of course, Fresno is bigger and has more crime. For example, in Clovis, I was programing 911 into my phone. I dialed it to see if it worked and hung up quickly. Then I called my neighbor across the courtyard. While we were talking, there was a knock at my door. My neighbor looked out her window and told me that a policeman was at my door. My caller ID registered when I called 911 and when they tried to call me back, they got a busy signal. They sent an officer to see if I was all right. I thought that was so nice.

We live in a rural area, but the police depts in the nearby areas seem to do a good job, I've heard no complaints. I think they do well at whatever duties they need to do.

I'm happy to say they are NOT selective in my area. I, at first, complained that they were never around when we needed them, now it seems like every other 10 cars that pass are officers. It's my turn from co-workers and family to get stopped. Everyone has their, "I got stopped" story lately.

morgan o, I live in a small suburban town here in Texas...like so many of our towns here....one runs into another and it's hard to tell where one starts and another ends. In the area I live in it is a very low crime area, thank goodness, and yes, they are doing their job well.
P.S. I haven't had a moving violation for 24 years.
