Clarification: I meant one of the modern metal buildings like they sell at Pioneersteel.com. I want to build a 3000 sq ft building as cheaply as possible to use as a garage on a rural property. Insulation and concrete floor are not requirements, just weather protection and security for when I'm traveling away from home. Maybe I could assemble some of it myself, and have a metal building contractor do the rest? I'm handy, but haven't tried to build a metal building before. Thanks

HARD is probably a relative word; much like Cheap is.

Without any detail at all regarding size; location; choice of material; it might be HARD for us to answer to your satisfaction.

EASY could be no more than PVC Ribs at a diam. that would flex; allowing you a half cirlce; attaching at ground level, and covering with fabric.

A Quonset Hut is one of the easiest types of construction to erect. Most companies have a series of panels that bolt together on the ground to make 1 section or arch which is typically 2'. Depending on the model, there are usually 5-6 panels per 2 section. The guage of the steel makes a difference in how heavy each section weighs, however unless you are building a very large width the heaviest panel typically weights 40lb or so. Once you make an arch section on the ground you simply raise it into place and connect it to the existing arch that is already standing. You must repeat this over and over til the completion of the body or shell of the building. Check out www Powerbiltbuildings.com there is an erection sequence on their website. Most often the use of heavy machinery is not necessary. Quonset hut kits are still being utilized throughout the world in unlimited applications.

Do you mean erecting your own Quonset hut? Like any other prefabricated structure the team which erects the structure should be experienced. You must lay the proper slab and footings to support the hut, have a method for moving the segments into place, assembling the segments, providing for windows, insulating the structure when fully assembled. Taking all the steps into consideration " Yes, it would be hard to build your own quonset hut."

It is not difficult to erect the Quonset hut itself. It is a DIY kit. 75% of customers erect their own building. One size nut and bolt. Unless you understand the foundation process, you may want to hire a concrete contractor.
