900 cm squared

2007-12-09 14:22:34 · answer #1 · answered by Gerard S 3 · 0 0

The short sides of the shaded region are 1/4 the length of the sides of the original square, so its perimeter, letting s be the length of one side of the square, would be s+s+1/4s+1/4s, or 2.5s. If 2.5s = 75cm, then s would have to be 30cm. The area of a square is s*s, so the area of the given square would have to be 900 cm^2. OK?

We know the outside of the green area adds up to 75 cm.

If the sides AD and BC are the same dimension as the tall sides of the green area.
The sides AB and DC are also the same (ABCD is a square), but they are 4 times the side of the green area which

then we know X+X+X/4+X/4=75
or 2.5 X = 75
X=30

The perimeter of square ABCD is 4X or 120 cm.

Since you know the perimeter of the green area is 75 cm.
Perimeter = 2(length)+2(Width)
You know that width of the green area is 1/4 of the length, so substitute it in -->
75 cm= 2L + 2W = 2L + 2(1/4L)= 2L +1/2L=2.5L
75=2.5L
L=30cm

Area of a square = (side or length)^2
= (30cm)^2
= 900cm^2

900 cm sq.
Work: x = side of square
shaded region = 1/4 side of square
length = x
width = 1/4 x

Perimeter = 2L + 2W
75 = 2x + .5x
75= 2.5x
30 = x

Area = s^2
Area = 30^2
Area = 900
