I was going to make a box for my girlfriend and do some other creative things with it well i needed to do something cheaper so i thought of writing a poem for her and writing it on clay and decorating it and framing the clay but I want to make the frame myself how would i go around doing that? I want it to be a 8X10 or would it be cheaper to just go buy a frame but I need to fit a thin thing of clay. Please help.

Cheaper to buy a shadow box to inset the clay tablet in. go to a craft store like micheals and purchase a shadow box they are dep enough to set something in. Shadow box = a picture frame witha recessed bottom to allow a person to put objects in.

While the idea is wonderful, and thoughtfull; Clay will be brittle once dry; even fired.

I might try some parchment, and fancy Font hand writing; then buy a frame and decorate it. You'll still be giving a very personal, one of a kind, gift.
