Reasons For Curfew

Imposing Curfews. The most effective - and most controversial - programs to reduce youth crime are youth curfews. More than 146 U.S. cities now have curfews requiring kids under 18 to be off the streets by a certain time. Cities such as Atlanta, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, and Washington, D.C., have effectively used curfews to reclaim their streets and parks from teenage gangs and thugs.

Police in Phoenix say that gang-related murders, drive - by shootings, robberies, and serious assaults have dropped by 42 percent since the curfew became law. In New Orleans, teen crime dropped by 27 percent after the curfew law was passed.

Though Bill Clinton and Bob Dole don't agree on much these days, they both strongly support youth curfews. In a recent speech to police officers, Dole said that it was time to get tough, with young criminals by trying them as adults and by imposing strict curfews on school nights. In a New Orleans speech, President Clinton urged that teens should be at home in "every city" by 8 p.m. on school nights and by 11 p.m. on weekends.

I'll ignore the statistics about teenage drivers and driving at night. But they are inexperienced and not equiped to deal with emergencies in the dark.

Secondly, there are no places under 18 year olds can go after midnight. There is no reason for them to be out.
What can they do? Walmart? Who-hoo!!

Minors needs to have a purpose and place to be and not just wandering around....that can lead to trouble. So putting a restriction on the time they can be out helps alleviate this problem.

It helps keep minors safe from things that can happen late at night when its dark and there aren't as many people around.

Its is also beneficial because hopefully the minors are at home with their families instead of being out "hanging out" for endless amounts of time.

Many kids under 18 work shift work, I was working in factories at 16, Military at 17....

Kids don't need curfews just good upbringing.

People under the age of eighteen are presumed, as a class, to be lacking the judgment that experience bestows.

There must be rules and laws to protect youth from itself, its own uninformed and inexperienced judgment as well as from those with information and experience but without morals or principles who would prey upon youth.

Number one it is not safe for them to be out without a responsible adult.

Number two, they are not mature enough (in most cases) to make wise decisions of who and where is safe, especially late at night... It is impossible for the parents to always know where they are after bed time.

Number three, It is good to know that our children will not be allowed to be out late by the police. Because my daughter used to sneak out through her bedroom window at night until she was brought home by the police and put on "police watch probation."
