Lasting effect was the creation of the Holy Roman Empire (none of holy, Roman or an empire) which was an institution that lasted in Europe until it was dissolved by Napoleon in 1806. The Emperor and the empire had various degrees of influence that depended on the actual powerbase of the incumbent, but it was always there. It had a significant effect in Renaissance and post-Renaissance Italy, for example.
