The star is looking through some old historical photos and sees a guy holding a gun that wasn't invented in the time that he's in.. Also the star's wife and son are killed in a car accident. ultimately, the star time travels to the old west and also gets back just in time to prevent his wife and son's death.

The guy who already said Back To The Future III is probably right. Check out the link below for a synopsis of the movie plot. However, I'm not certain it is exactly as you describe.

I'd say Back to the Future 3 as well.. that's the only one I can think of where they go to the old west.
