Stuff from space hits the earth ALL THE TIME! It's nothing to be scared of. Every time you see a "shooting star", that's dust, rock, or debris from space entering the earth's atmosphere.
Now, there was a show on TV about the Mayan Calendar, and it generated a lot of doomsday prophecies and somehow that all got translated into "the world will end on Dec. 21st, 2012." There have been many variations; a giant asteroid will hit the earth, a rogue planet from outer space will hit the earth, etc. etc.
Listen, the mayan calendar "rolls over" on Dec. 21st, 2012. It had to at some point. It's not infinite. Our calendar rolls over every year on Dec. 31st/Jan 1st. It means nothing.
NASA tracks an extensive catalog of objects that might potentially come close to or impact the earth. They track 100 years out. If one were going to hit the earth in five years, they would already be tracking it. They aren't, because it doesn't exist.
I hope this helps.
-edit-
To Iggnant 1 and Usafjw19 below; Nostradamus is vague and his prophecies that HAVE been "decoded" have only been done so after the fact ("oh yeah, this must have been talking about the assassination of ..."). The Bible says, "no man knows the day nor the hour".

Can't say if it was a meteor or not but there are reports all over the net that a sonic boom was heard in Nevada as of 22nd April. That was not over the weekend - that was last week. However we are in a meteor shower called the Lyrid peaked April 21st/22nd so the likelihood that it was a meteor is quite high but this is not a portent of doom, the earth is regularly struck by meteors, in fact there are many meteor showers throughout the year we are at the end of the Lyrids and start of the Eta Aquarids which should peak around 5th May. In fact it is common for the tail end of one meteor shower to overlap with the start of another, aside from that there are many sporadic meteors hitting the earth's atmosphere all the time. Sometimes these meteors hit the earth and break apart producing meteorites. Meteorites are rare but only because the earth's surface is very vast compared to the number of meteorites that make it through the atmosphere, making finding meteorites hard especially when they bury themselves into the ground and when 75% of the earth's surface is ocean. As for your prediction that this is the beginning of the fulfilment of the Mayan prophecy (I know that you know 2012 started in January), I believe this to be a hoax. The Mayan calender resetting was superimposed with some already discredited astrological predictions then as it spread, layer upon layer of speculation and pseudo scientific mumbo jumbo was added to the point where the whole mish-mash of nonsense is believed in one form or another by people all over the internet. Although I have never met anyone in real life willing to step forward and claim to actually believe the nonsense for fear of being ridiculed throughout 2013 when the world doesn't end. I am however willing to make this prediction about 2012. Around the 22nd to 24th of December there will be fierce competition for parking spaces and an increase in incidents of road rage as many people who would otherwise have saved up for Christmas and ordered presents throughout the year, put off doing this in favour of stocking up on supplies for the coming end. When that end fails to happen on 21st they will suddenly realise they haven't prepared for Christmas and the result will be massive panic buying of gift wrap cards, gifts, turkeys and other supplies.

It's a prediction based off of the book of Revelations. The 2nd coming of Christ is supposed to come on December 21, 2012. Which is supposed to signal the end of the world. So adding in the meteor is only a perspective of the "fire from the skies" excerpt from Revelations. So no one will really know if its true until December 21, 2012. (Oh and this date is never actually mentioned in the Bible, its just a prediction of what day Revelations is talking about)

Your friend is an idiot. Please do not become one yourself. Think for yourself. Why would you be scared over something a friend tells you? Is he/she an expert in these things? Don’t you think the experts would know.
But just in case you can’t think for yourself, I will tell you that several observatories are tracking asteroids, NASA publishes their data (see other answers above) and anything large enough to cause concern would be known about many years in advance.
Now you have to ask yourself, is your friend one of these experts?
Stop being silly and go out there and do some research – use the internet to learn real science and not pseudo science, conspiracy theory, and stupid predictions that NEVER come to fruition.
People have committed suicide or given up all their possessions on silliness like this. Do you really want to be like that?

Yes, meteors have hit the earth many times in the past. They'll do so many times in the future.
Anyone who says that the next major meteor impact will take place on any particular day in the future is a moron.
You need to choose your friends more carefully.

is it true that your friend is scaring the crap out of you?
uh, sounds like it.
think for a second. HOW does your friend know about something that is going to happen that far ahead? Is he psychic? Wake up James Randi!
Did he say he saw a news report? Did you? Think that would qualify as 'news' ? (even on Fox News?)
Be afraid of real things. Remember to buckle your seat belt EVERY time!
your friend is either cruel or a fool. <--- opinion

No large-sized object like an asteroid or comet is scheduled to hit Earth in the foreseeable future. This website shows all potentially hazardous objects currently being tracked. Of all those shown, not one is going to hit Earth ==>http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/ca/

No. Is not true. There is no astronomical observatory that has knowledge of any body in a collision course with Earth, not now nor in 2012
