When entering a Filipino home... Do you take off your shoes, sandals, or flip-flops even if the hosts insist you can leave them on?

Much as I would love to observe this Pinoy tradition (more true in the provinces rather than in the cities), I usually comply with the "rules" of my host. I usually play it by ear. We have a friend here in the States that keeps a basket of slippers by their front door and her kids are trained to offer guests these slippers upon arrival. Another Pinay friend (also here in States) insists on no footwear inside her house so either we're barefooted or we're on our socks/stockings. To each his/her own.

The tradition isn't observed in every house anymore...so I try to observe first. If I see that there are shoes/sandals/slippers outside the door, I assume that the host/owner of the house wants to have the them taken off prior to entering their house. But if there are no footwear outside the door, I go in with my shoes on.

Yes.

Filipino or non Filipino, it is customary in almost every houses here in Canada to remove one's shoes/footwear and place it to a rack provided. Because of the climate here most houses have carpet on the floor and one has to understand that dirt, mud and at this time of the year, snow, on ones shoes will make the carpet really dirty. Even on houses that have hard wood, laminate or linoleum floor covering, shoes are removed upon entering the house and a pair of "in-house" flip-flops is offered by the host.

Edit:
It is also the practice in Singapore. It is part of being clean. Singaporeans observe cleanliness inside and outside their houses

Not practiced so much in the city. In towns or in the barrios, yes. But sometimes when I enter a house I haven't been before, I take off my footwear out of respect for the owners or hosts. And usually, they insist that I leave my shoes on (maybe out of respect for me, too).

This tradition was actually done not only in the Philippines but in other Asian countries as well because the floor in houses before are usually wood. Wearing leather shoes would be slippery on some wood grains... Hence, to prevent accidents people walk barefoot...

Nowadays, floors are usually concrete, marble or unglazed tiles... And shoes, sandals and slippers have rubber soles... Hence, it is no longer applicable...

Personally, when I see that the floor is wooden or carpeted I would remove my shoes so as to keep them clean...

I dont like my house to be messy. If the guests are unexpected then I offer them a house slippers before they enter the house so it's an implication that I dont want my house to be messy.

But if the guests are expected and I pressume they are more than five person, I let their shoes on provided that the next day I have my cleaners to come and clean the mess.

IT GOES on and on and on.All family and friends; and there will likely be rather a lot will devour as a lot as they can.Hardly any ingesting. Is also somewhat bit of dancing. When they have got completed to gulp the whole lot they are going to all go not to be noticeable once more. That is the majority. The ceremony will take a long time too.All guests and youself can be dressed to kill.Have fun and join . Only a phrase of warning while you marry a filipina you marry the whole household

I know a lot of people who still do that but due to hosts insisting we keep it on, we keep it on. But its an age-old tradition of respect for the home of the host.

Showing my courtesy as a guess, I always take off my shoes even if the host insists to leave them on. Unless, his/her floor is EXTREMELY dirty, which my feet may get dirty, then I would leave my shoes on!

Depends. If it is the house of a relative, or a friend, with whom I am close to, I'll treat it as my own house and get in with my shoes on.

If, however, I am really a stranger - it further depends on whether I am wearing my best socks, or the ones with holes in them. If it is the former, I take off my shoes. If not, I shall say "I forgot something. I'll come back later."
