I follow instructions but usually am stopped by terms I don't understand.When I try to find what the terms mean there is always
another term I don't know and on and on.......

You have to remember that google is your best friend, when you see terms like PCI-e or Frontsidebus, your best bet to understanding what they mean is to google it. Google can search through forums and yahoo answers where your question you typed in may have been asked by someone else. YOu should find everything your looking for from google.

Learn to use Google and Wikipedia, read books, take a night school class, talk to friends, specially grandkids, join a computer club, etc.

TIP: Go to Google and type in:

Define:cdrom

Repeat on Wikipedia. Amazing!!!

The best books I've seen are called the "Teach Yourself Visually series (XP, Vista, OS X, etc.), here's an example:

The best way to do learn is to actually use it :) I did that and i work on websites now (and only 6 years have passed)

I attended a free course at a vocational school for beginners. It was supposed to be a basic course but it went beyond that, thanks to a great instructor. Check your area to see if such free courses are available to you. Sometimes colleges offer such classes.
