You do realize that the platform of both parties changed in the last half century, and that Republicans became the party of continuing segregation while the Democratic party wanted civil rights?

The question isn't exactly worded right. The question should ask what regions of the country. The Northern states fought and freed the states while the Southern states established the Jim Crow laws. In the 1950's, 60's 70's through today, the Southern states have opposed civil rights while the Northern states have supported it. The Republicans controlled the North when it opposed slavery but also controlled the South when it opposed Civil Rights. Which party put through most of the Civil Rights bills? the Democrats. This is not to suggest the South is racist, because at the time of slavery, most of America was, and still is racist, but the South supported slavery because it was the means to economic production. The change in party affiliation by region is largely due to the minority vote. The Republican's had the minority vote because it supported abolishing slavery but then the Democrats got the minority vote because they supported Civil Rights. The reasons for this? Tons of African American's moved to the North after the Civil War leaving the Caucasians who opposed slavery to vote their representatives, the Democrats, because the Democrats had not pulled for abolition of slavery. These Democrats held on to their jobs by voting for laws that their constituents wanted, these Jim Crow Laws. In the 40's, 50's and so on, people moved away from the north to the South and West and thats why the shift in party affiliation and thus needs of the constituents changed.
Now, I gave you a realistic and thoughtful answer. I hope you weren't just looking for a question to prove your belief in the greatness of the Republican party because quite frankly, they both suck. Now they don't care about the voters, but who is padding their wallets the most.

What used to be called the Democrats did, and what used to be called the Republicans did.
However, those bear no resemblance or bearing on today's parties.
In the 60s, the Republicans were in favor of KEEPING Jim Crowe laws, and fought viciously to uphold those laws. The Democrats pushed civil rights legislation through, and then all the old school racist Democrats from the south left the party and joined the Republicans, pretty much making the party it is today.
So.... which is more likely to have an influence on today's parties, their actions 150 years ago, or 40 years ago?
The French were once the most feared military power in the world. Want to argue about how applicable Napoleon is to today's military standings in the world?

Lincoln was a whig for most of his career. in 1856 he joined the newly formed Republican party on the basis of its anti-slavery position. As you know, Lincoln was succeded by his vice-president. Andrew Johnson, a democrat. Johnson, while he did support the ending of slavery he allowed southern states to add anti-***** provisions into their constitutions so as to bring about the end of Reconstruction. His 'deal' was to grant amnesty to all southern leaders if they would ratify the 13th amendment. They insisted on the anti-***** provisions to do so. After Johnson agreed to this, congress restored military control over the south. Grant, a republican, didn't do too much either way. Hayes, another Republican ended Reconstruction and had no problem with the Jim Crow Laws passed by all of the southern states. for the next 80 years blacks had few friends in government with the exception of FDR and Harry Truman even if they were both as racist as most whites of their generation.

Republican Abraham Lincoln, as president of the US, issued his "Emancipation Proclamation," which stated that slavery should be abolished.
When the North won the Civil War, slavery was abolished.
The Southern Democrat states enacted the Jim Crow laws, to prevent black people from exercising their rights as citizens of the US.
The Republican Party during Lincoln's era is quite different from the Republican Party today; in fact, it has flip-flopped its stance on civil rights since that time.
Today's Republican Party is composed of many people from the South; the same geographical area that many of the Jim Crow laws were passed.
Most people who are from minority groups vote Democrat.

Yeah we know Lincoln was a republican. And the Southern Democrats wrote the Jim Crow laws. That was a hundred years ago. But in modern history the Civil Rights laws were introduced by Democratic administrations and opposed by Republicans.

The Democrats enacted and passed the Jim Crow laws, they also passed the laws making slavery legal and started the klan.
It was the Republican party that opposed slavery and overturned it and that fought for and passed the civil rights acts while Robert Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson had secret/illegal wire taps on Dr. King.

Democrats owned the slave, wrote Jim Crow and started the KKK. THey also tell blacks today that they are worthless unless there is a government handout, set aside or program for them. Democratic programs have destroyed the black family.
Republicans freed the slaves.
