I would like a video card that supports hardware acceleration for x264 mkv video (up to 1080p). This is important to me because my cpu is a few years old and want smooth playback (have a p4 2.8ht).

Most any vid card that doesn't use shared memory. That technique is too slow for good video reproduction.

I use an NVidia card with my wide screen format monitor in the native resolution of 1440x900. When the mobo manufacturer (ECS) announced a BIOS upgrade that supported wide screen format, I tried it. I watched less that 5 minutes of 1 movie before I changed it back.....

1080P??? That's one of the hardest jobs you could ever ask a computer to do.

The most expensive graphics card on the planet won't help because your older PC's CPU will choke on that much data!!! And, I'm guessing, you don't even have enough RAM.

You need to save your money and buy a "state of the art" system designed specifically for what you want to do.
