i want to major in art, and I saw that for certain art majors the degree is a BA, and for others it was a BFA. What's the difference? Which is better career-wise?

The BA is a liberal arts academic degree that includes considerable study outside of the major such as literature, history, science, math, etc... The art portion of the degree will include more art history and theory of art than does a studio BFA.

The BFA is an applied artistic degree intended to refine your art and skill. It will include some liberal arts study but will primarily concentrate on the production of your art.

The difference is considerable - you need to look at the program curriculum of each and decide which you'd prefer. As for which is better career-wise, that depends entirely upon what you want to do as a career. If you intend to create art then the BFA will serve you better than if you want to teach K-12 art in the public schools.

BA is more academic, a BFA improves the talents you have. My sister has a BFA and has her own gallery-good money. She's a fairly decent artist in her own right, but more important she is very critical about other peoples art. If it won't sell she'll be upfront with you.
