If you meet a man whose home is on the sidewalk and he reeks of booze, the best kindness you could offer him is to refuse him money.
If you meet a child who is lost and wandering in a mall, the best kindness and understanding you could offer would be to help that child find it's caregivers/parents.
Each instance requires thought and care.
Exercise both in this life. :)

I think you answered your own question. If they are innocent how can you treat them with anything but gentleness. There are so many who act innocent while stabbing you in the back. Innocence deserves love, isn't that why we protect children with fiercely? Ignorance can't be condemned either. Perhaps they haven't been informed,or they can't process it. Why not treat them kindly and with understanding? Unless you can't get your mind around why the do what they do. Yur question implies you are not innocent or without understanding. With that in mind, you should know what I've said. and then some.

If you find someone who makes a mistake or does something because of innocent ignorance, you have to make them see that mistake without seeming to be condescending, perhaps by asking a question starting with something like Did you realize or what do you think about doing it this way instead. Kindness and understanding is to help them learn what the mistake was in order to not repeat it without seeming controlling. any other way can make them defend their position against someone they see as being controling or dominating.

Imo...I think it depends....on whether the situation is something that is long lasting or something that was just in passing...if it was just in passing then smile and keep on going....but if not then a short polite (still smiling) explanation should do it....good luck!! :)
