I don't understand the current laws, I'll bust out the old cliche and say if you're old enough to die for your country (18) then you're old enough to drink. Plus, if they think people aren't old enough to make responsible decisions about drinking until they are 21, why do they give out drivers licenses to 16 year olds? Making underage drinking a crime only encourages unsafe binge drinking when the parents are out of town. My kids will drink responsibly with me well before they are 21.

Drinking has its benefits, but i think it does more harm than good when you drink too much or when you drink as a 'young person' (not the legal age though, i would say people under 18 should try not to drink).
I'm one of those hippies who believe that making something illegal for you will make you want to have it more than you would have wanted to otherwise. The trouble is in the fact that they make drinking illegal for a certain age group. So, the idea is drinking is legal, just not when you're under 21. That makes kids want to break the law and look cool before their peeps (maybe they just like the buzz). Because, for teenagers drinking is a privilege that is being denied to them. And anyone that wins that privilege is cool in their eyes. Underage drinking is given so much hype and that's why we have so many law-breakers.
If they would just educate kids about the dangers of underage drinking (affects their livers and kidneys more than that of adults, causes faster nerve cell death in kids, stunts development by interfering with hormonal balance in the body) maybe that will work better than making it lawfully wrong to drink as a person under 21.
I was born and raised in a country where drinking is legal for everyone. but i never drank as a kid because i knew i wasn't old enough to drink And, social norms had only so much to do with it. It was ok for kids to drink, but they never did. Strange, i know. They should teach a thing or two about responsible drinking to kids. Maybe give them a glass of wine, or a sip of beer once in a while. That way they won't drink as much as they can when they get the opportunity at a friend's party.

I did it when I was underage. Kids will continue to do it. There's no stopping it.
