simple way ...pull the number 1 plug out rotate engine,when it gets to the comp. stroke you will hear air come out of that plug hole!!! then just set your timing mark where it needs to be depending on your vehicle

just like the first person said you can not get compression with an opn valve and that doesnt even relate to this i want going to write that but i obviously knew that i know a lot about cars
ok cylinder one will be on compression stroke when the intake valve is just closing

NO..both valves will be closed when the piston is at TDC when you roll the motor around the valves will stauclosed untill BDC and the exhaust Valve will open as the piston travles to TDC once again this is the POWER,EXHAUST cycle there are 4 of them...intake,compression,power,exhaust.hope this helps

pull out number 1 plug get someone to turn engine overwhith finger in plug hole r pull off valve cover n c if valves r closed closed poss is compression stroke

first its the intake stroke, then compression stroke, power stroke, exhaust stroke. if its on the compression stroke the valve will be closed if it was on the intake or exhast stroke the valve would be open

Go buy the repair manual .
You may need a few tools as well .
Compression gauge , etc. the book will explain a lot
It can help with timing & complete overhaul of engine .
