It's a good question. I asked a similar one a few days ago:

I think it's a combination of factors. For one thing we're a very isolationist country. For another our media is very poor, having developed into a group that cares more about ratings than informational quality. So Americans are very ill-informed on these issues, and don't care what the rest of the world thinks.
The USA is also more religious than most other western countries, which makes it difficult for us to accept scientific findings when they run contrary to religious beliefs (i.e. evolution vs. creationism), and this makes many Americans skeptical of science as a whole, which is why so many claim that global warming is a big conspiracy.
I think the US has several serious problems which other western countries don't have, which creates an environment where we're very slow to accept issues like these.

Global warming is under debate everywhere...hence the Kyoto Protocol. Evolution is under debate because Christians take offense, again...this is debated elsewhere as well...hence the Vatican taking an official position on it. National health care is under debate because its been turned into a debacle here; other nations already have better health care systems. Capital punishment keeps coming under fire for it being humane... if the states would fire the drunk bastards administering the injections, there wouldnt be any problems. For me all four of these topics, and many more fall under 1) Corporations having too much freedom in what they do (i.e. the pollution, screwing people on health insurance and medical bills, etc) or 2) People on their moral high-horse saying whats right and wrong.

confident, there are various similarities. stupid economist say it is going to cost too lots, clever ones say this is not. stupid scientist say worldwide warming is a organic prevalence and clever ones say guy is inflicting the warming. those being injury the main, the destructive. this is the destructive who're suffering the main from worldwide warming . this is the destructive who're uninsured in united statesa. and can't get the wellness care they want. comparable stereotypes: selfish unenlightened knuckle dragging human beings vs. the giving enlightened clever human beings

I think the answer is simple. The US has been too obsessed with power, industry, capitalism and the fantasy of ruling the world to stop and smell the roses and realize that money isn't the most encompassing thing in this world but people and the earth are. Our leaders seem to have it backwards.

Let's see. Evolution: who cares, has no impact on the country politically or economically.
Global warming: No scientific data to PROVE man is the cause. Nor is there proof that it is having all these negative impacts on the world, as the alarmists claim. The regulations that the global warming activists want, would have a serious negative effect on our economy.
Socialized Health Care: Is a disaster waiting to happen, for more reasons than I care to type. I'd be here for a good 20 minutes typing. It's a disaster in all the countries that have it. We don't want it!!
Capital Punishment: Needs to be used more often!

Unless I'm hallucinating, these issues are [unfortunately] heavily debated - and we'll probably go down the shitter soon after those other western countries. Like those other western countries embracing the mysticism that supports global-warming fantasies & enslavement of the medical industry we too have dead-ender intellectuals driving the boat.

America is the only rich western country. It has a $12 trillion GDP. Even the poor in America have a comfortable lifestyle.
Socialistic handouts are proven to reduce a country's GDP by stifling innovation.
England is now down to number 28 on the list of population/GDP list. Blame the handouts.
America is around number 12 on the list and it is falling. Currently, the U.S. spends over $1.2 trillion a year on handouts (that is nearly twice the budget for the military). Studies show 75% of all handouts goes to Liberal single parent households.
