The Supreme Court of the United States is the highest court in the land. All Supreme Court decisions must be followed by all the lower courts, until that decision is overturned, if it ever is.
Example--In Plessy v Ferguson, the Supreme Court ruled that segregation was legal. Other courts followed that decision until the case of Brown v Board of Education reversed the Plessy v Ferguson decision and declared segregation unconstitutional.
