1. Set up a 'Firewall'...
With all that's happening on the internet these days it's simply too risky to sit "naked" on the internet unless you really know what you're doing.
Comodo Free Firewall
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

2. Keep 'Windows' up-to-date.....
Let someone else have the "fun" of being infected with the latest viruses. Visit 'Windows Update' weekly,
or enable 'automatic updates'.
http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

3. Install a good 'Anti-Virus' program...
AVAST 4 Home Edition Antivirus
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Not all antivirus tools are the same; if you find that the one you use isn't working to your satisfaction, you should do some research and try an alternative.

4. Install a good 'Anti-Spyware' program...
Ad-Aware, Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware are the programs I currently use to eliminate popups, spyware, and adware from my computer. They are well-written, and do not add popups or ads themselves.
SuperAntiSpyware (free)
http://www.superantispyware.com/...
Ad-Aware (free)
http://www.lavasoft.com/
SpyBot S&D (free)
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

5. Get Educated...
To be blunt, all the protection in the world won't save you from yourself.
Don't open attachments that you aren't positive are ok.
Don't fall for phishing scams.
Don't click on links in email that you aren't positive are safe.
Don't install "free" software without checking it out first - many "free" packages are free because they come loaded with spyware, adware and worse.

There is help in Microsoft site:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
This is for XP SP2, there are other help, too. But the following site speak out the true:
http://www.consumers-reports.net/spyware.html?OVRAW=Spyware&OVKEY=spyware&OVMTC=standard&OVADID=12448976012&OVKWID=150355996512
Do not download any anti-spyware before you read the instruction carefully. Many computer shops offer those after rebate free Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware software. Those are very safe software programs. People are trying to get free anti-virus and free anti-spyware, but I really don't know if there are any the side affect yet.

First of all, you definitely need an antivirus program on your computer. If you don't have one, you are definitely going to have problems. Spyware can be put on your computer if you download videos, songs, etc. One that I got was a pop up saying that my browser had been hyjacked by malware program. It warned me that my system would crash if I didn't buy their software to clean it off. This was a virus, and it was a fake to try to get you to buy something. I was online with tech help with Norton, and $99.95 later, my system was good again. Lesson learned, don't allow activex controls to be accepted on your computer. Careful about downloads too!

Run both of these on-line scans. Both are free and excellent at detecting and removing malware free of charge. There is no need to un-install any of your current protections (if you have any) before using these.

1. Scan for virus, worms, dialers, etc. and remove (free online scan, no downloaded program) with BitDefender's Online Scanner
http://www.bitdefender.com/

2. Scan for trojans, adware, cookies, and spyware and remove (free online scan, no downloaded program) with Ewido Online Scanner ( now known as AVG Anti-Spyware). This is NOT the same as AVG Anti-Virus.
http://www.ewido.net/en/

These scans will take quite a bit of time. The time is necessary to clean-up an infected computer.

Good luck.

Get AdAware or Spybot: Search and Destroy. Both are free for personal use and both do a pretty good job. There are many many other spyware removal tools out there, but most cannot be trusted to not install their own spyware...

You have to have an antispyware, antivirus, firewall, to just go onto the internet. Only takes one second, and you can get hit with trojans, spyware, adware, malware, rogue dialers.

Superantispyware, is an excellent free program that finds what all other miss. Plus you will get auto updates.
http://www.superantispyware.com

Antivirus, you can only run one or you will have conflict with your system. Avast, download the free version for home personale use. Background scanner is excellent and on the hour auto. updates. http://www.avast.com

ZoneAlarm free for home personal use firewall. http://www.zonealarm.com (Look on home, in their webpage and download the free version).

You got nicked. The companies that make the annoying pop-ups that they just planted on your computer will now try to sell you a program that removes them. Some of them are really hard to get rid of. Be prepared to spend some bucks hiring someone to remove the garbage.

I know of only one that is really good and free. Go to site below using e on your desktop, thats Internet explorer. Then click where it says free housecall scan. Let it run and don't interrupt it till scan is done. Unlike others that scan and then find stuff and ask you to pay, this will scan and if found it removes it free. Merry Christmas!

p.s. Only works with internet explorer
