"The difference between men and boys is the price tags on their toys."

I never understood that when I was young and single. I completely understand it now that I am older and married.

My husband has a hobby which can be quite expensive to maintain: he flies remote control sailplanes (gliders). He's getting what is actually a fairly inexpensive kit, as he likes to build during the winter when it's too cold to fly.

He's getting something else, something also in the toy department. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you what it is, as he sometimes peruses my answers to see what's on my mind. I think he already knows what it is, but I'd rather not just spell it out, if that's okay. Let's just say the house will be rockin' on Christmas Day.

We have a budget every year, and every year I follow mine when buying gifts for him, and he goes over when he buys things for me. I think maybe this year I will completely lose all memory of the things I have already purchased, and all ability to tote up the totals on receipts, and buy some other things, too. He has, after all, been a very good boy this year ;)

After much trial and error, I have come up with a gift for my wife that is fun and simple. She loves to shop for clothes, especially if she can get them on deep sales. As with most of us, she has her own tastes and ideas of what she likes. But, buying clothes for her is risky because she is too polite to say she doesn't like something or take it back. (If she doesn't like something, she'll just let it hang in the closet.) And, getting her a gift certificate is kind of impersonal. Plus, there is nothing much under the tree to open. So, I go to her favorite clothing stores and try to find the ugliest, worst fitting, mismatched pieces I can find. Then, I have the store wrap them up. (Every time the clerks ask me if I'm sure about what I buying. I assure them I know what I am doing.)

The first time I tried this, my wife, was speechless. She opened this butt-ugly green checked mini-skirt to which I cheerfully chirped, "Do you like it?!" You could tell by the look on her face she hated it, but she felt compelled to thank me. Next, she opened an 8 inch wide leather and spandex belt. I told her, "That one was 75% off!!" She smiled, weakly. Then, there was the holiday motif sweater with a couple of big snowflakes right on the bosom area. After a few more such crappy presents, she finally opened a smaller box that contained all the receipts for everything I had bought and the light finally came on. She figured out I had purposely bought all this junk just so she could take it back and get what she really wanted. We had a good laugh and I went with her to exchange everything. It's just a different way to give a gift certificate that is a whole lot more fun. Now, the whole family gets a kick out of seeing what goofy stuff I can find to have wrapped for my wife every year.

I have no clue yet. The only thing I know I'm getting him for sure is a framed picture of us. He has a few pics of me leaned up against his computer at work, and I want him to something framed of the two of us for his office. But other than that, I'm completely clueless.

A gift voucher from a certain place so he can select what he wants.

It is what he wants this year.

Fish..lol. He wants more tropical fish for his fish tank. He is the sort of guy who goes out and buys whatever he wants anyway so it was very difficult even getting that much out of him. :-)
