Personally because I enjoy it more. I am well enough off to buy myself what I wish and frankly am not very materialistic. However I love to see the reactions of others on receiving gifts. Especially when unexpected. I don't I have ever gone on a date without taking something for her.

The more you give, the more you end up receiving in the end. It may not be immediate, but your reward will come, either in this life or the next.
Remember the story of Jimmy Stewart in "It's a Wonderful Life".
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038650/
He gave virtually all he had to his friends and townspeople for years, with very little expectation for anything in return. Then when when he was in a pinch and it looked like he was going to lose his business, all those he had helped throughout the years showed up and poured out their generosity to him with as much as they could afford. He was saved and the parting toast was, "Here's to my brother...the RICHEST man in town!" ...as he was rich in friends which was more important.
If you live only for yourself, you will not be remembered and your reward may come only in this life. If you store up rewards in Heaven, instead, where neither moth nor rust can ruin, your reward will be forever for the kindness you showed to others on earth.
Society just gets along better when we help one another versus squandering it all to ourselves. Others may have the critical skills, knowledge, or resources you need to solve your problem. But you won't have access to those unless you give of yourself into the system.

Well, say the object in question is a man-eating tiger. I'd rather give that than recieve, wouldn't you?
Seriously though, giving is 'better' becuase it gives you that warm fuzzy feeling inside, and when you give, you don't have to write thank you notes.
It's all about greed and selfishness. If you give more than you recieve, you're showing that you're not greedy or selfish.

To know all the answers you would have to be there, which you are obviously not, and so no one can convince you that giving is better than receiving.
It is ironic how many people only give necause they karmically expect to recieve because they gave. No wonder the world hates Americans, no matter how much we give them!

Good things happen back, always. It may take a while but something good will happen. It inspires others to give. It's just a nice thing to do and makes you happy. Makes you look unselfish. You can work off of that I'm sure.

Giving gives pleasure to others
Giving can change things, change the world around you, change people's lives
Giving makes you think about other people than yourself so it is good for you, makes you a more rounded person and makes you think about new and different things
Giving means you put your money, energy, intelligence, time and talent to use
Giving can be a way to put your ideas into practice, or to share your ideas with other people

Giving makes you FEEL good by puting a smile on someones' face and making that persons day! Receiving sometimes you don't like what you get. If you give more than likely you get BACK what you REALLY want so giving is an example reflection of what you want. SO GIVE,GIVE,GIVE till people get what u want!

It makes you feel good to help someone less fortunate, make their day, put a smile on a kid's face, etc.
Receiving gifts you don't want or need doesn't bring happiness. It is better to rewrap it and bring it to a retirement home, children's ward in a hospital, etc.
