First off, humans belong to the same genus as apes (ie same species) but are not direct descendants. Instead, we evolved from a common ancestor of the apes. But you are struggling with this conceptually. You have to be able to realize that changes take thousands and thousands of years. You dont see things evolve in single generations. Once you start thinking about things by the thousands or tens of thousands of years, it all makes sense.
Imagine some pack of animals that are running out of food. lets say there is a food source available but nearly all of the pack cannot digest it. But there is one or a small group that can. What happens? The ones that cannot eat this only source of food die off and the ones that can eat it survive. Their offspring contain this same trait and now this trait is now the norm. This is the basic premise of the survival of the fittest that Darwin first realized. Now multiply this effect over thousands and thousands of years and you have a species that have retained the traits that were needed to survive.
Admittedly this is a quick and crude explanation of the concept. If you read up on this, there are many documented and provable examples of this concept. It is a difficult concept to get a grasp on and I am not sure why only people with strong mathematics and science knowledge seem to get it. In reality, that is just ignorance from people who are not able to critically think.
You should try picking up a copy of Origin of Species. A little reading and little bit of desire to think critically and you will understand.

Scientists don't say that we came from monkeys. That's a common misconception that people make.They say that monkeys and humans share a common ancestor. That means that there was once a creature (lets call it that) that spread into two groups (one on one side of the earth and one on the other side) and one group of them evolved into monkeys or gorillas or chimpanzees etc. and the other group (due to their surroundings) evolved into humans. Nowhere does it say , in any science information source, that we evolved from monkeys. It says that monkeys and humans evolved FROM the same thing, but into DIFFERENT species. I don't believe in the theory of evolution, but you had it all mixed up so I explained it to you.

I hate how christians always say that evolution involves humans evolving from monkeys, it's a misconception...
according to Darwinisms, all primates evolved from a common ancestor, but it's not as if there were once chimpanzees and then some chimpanzees suddenly turned into humans
as to why we think this? scientific evidence

We as humans belong the the ape species, we did NOT evolve from apes, we evolved along a different branch from a common ancestor of the apes!
Now lets delve deeper - ALL animal / mammals have five digits on their hands and feet, STUDY ANATOMY, BEFORE YOU COMMENT, so ALL animal / mammalian life on this planet is related to ONE five digit creature!

we didn't evolve directly from monkeys like the spider monkey and things like that but we evolved from other primates like apes or chimps. we're in the same group of mamals. if ur catholic and believe that God made everything (i believe so) then think God is making us and this has to take millions of years so he made us look like an ape then he decides to add hair to our heads and less to our bodies that's what happens when something evolves if u want to think of it that way.
