All things considered, I'll go with Led Zeppelin. It doesn't matter what else I've been listening to or how long it's been since I last listened to them - every time I put in a Zeppelin album I realize all over again who the real rock gods are. (Yeah, all their records came out before I was born.) But what's your opinion?

I'd probably have a different answer for as many times as this question gets asked a day...lol...but I just downloaded the "Mothership" greatest hits album cuz I realized I didn't have any Zep in my iTunes, and once again, I fell in love. "Heartbreaker" gets my vote for greatest riff ever.

You are talking to an old hippie gal who was waiting in line when the record store opened to get their first album. I saw Jimmy Paige with the Yardbirds when I was in high school, and even followed him through Soft Machine, which was by then on available on eight track and the vinyl. Then came the mighty Led Zeppelin. I saw them in Chicago in the early seventies. Wish I could be more specific about the years, but, you know! I always loved Ramble On and the Lemon Song. Any one of them would blow you away in a live concert. I have a little hearing distortion, but I say it was worth it! You were Dazed and Confused by the time you left the concert.

Tough question - there are probably 5 or 10 that are equal for me.
Here is how I would pick the winner: a band that I like and that my 5 year old daughter likes. Both the Beatles and Led Zeppelin have passed this test.
I bought a Beatles CD of greatest hits a while back and the two of us danced for 20 minutes to the first 10 songs!

Well my loyalty is with the Beatles, they are in a category of their own. They started so many changes, you can listen to a Beatles song and tell what time in their history it came from unlike so many other bands who just stay the same. But aside from that, if I really want a band to ROCK OUT to yes Led Zeppelin gets my vote, there is almost no better single album then Zeppelin IV

I'd go with Led Zeppelin as well. A local rock radio station in my areas does a countdown at the end of the year and according to the DJ Stairway to Heaven has always beens number one for the past four years.

Hovering between Led Zep & Black Sabbath
Sabbath probably had more influence on the heavier side of rock/metal & Zep on the pure rock side
Think I'll go with Zep though ..... Was really annoyed I failed to scrounge reunion tickets off John Bonhams sister last time I saw her. :(
EDIT: Not sure I'll bother with Mothership, after all it's the same tracks that were on the last re-mastered allbum, just slightly tweaked. I've read reviews that say thay while it can be played louder without distorting theres not that much difference.

If we're including punk rock in this, then The Ramones. If not, then The Who.
Led Zeppelin is right up there though. I just bought "Mothership" too and have been playing it into the ground.
Other honorable mentions: Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Rush, Queen, Social Distortion.

"The Police" I camped out and paid $250 bucks for a ticket to see them in concert on Jan 24, I wasn't even born when they broke up. I'd love to go and see The Led Zeppelin Reunion Concert at the O2 in London tonight. The tickets were 750.00 Euros = 1,098.37 U.S. Dollars each. I'm a Kylie Minougue Fan.

I vote The Who as the best "Rock and Roll" and The Beatles for their wide spectrum of original works. I wouldn't put Pink Floyd in the "Rock band" category as this is a bit of a generalisation. They are in another category namely "Progressive Rock" which I hate. I'd call them Timeless in a class of there own. (le; same as Queen class of their own) And this discussion of great bands can go on for ever.
