Can one person be charged with conspiracy to commit a crime? IE: Somebody could be charged with conspiracy to murder for being caught in possession of a loaded firearm?

In Missouri, it's only a conspiracy if more than one person is involved. If only one person is involved, it is considered an "attempt" to commit the crime, which has a similar punishment to the conspiracy.

You say -" what if a person decides/intends to commit murder, but has not as yet performed any physical act? is it illegal?"... In that case, how would anyone even know that you really intended on killing anybody? Unless the person has taken steps to enact a plan who could inform the police? In the case of 2 people being charged in a conspiracy to commit a crime, obviously they have been caught...whether guilty or not. Either way, I believe a person would still be charged with conspiracy to commit murder (or whatever crime) but like I said, without an accomplice of SOME kind, how could this crime be brought to the light of day..or known to authorities. That is unless he/she told on himself :)

Being in possession of a weapon isn't enough. Conspiracy to commit a crime would mean entering into a plan to commit a crime.

No. The possession of the loaded firearm is only circumstantial evidence of an intention to commit murder. However, if you say "caught" with a loaded gun, then I assume that possession of a loaded firearm is a crime in your jurisdiction.

It's not a conspiracy unless more than one person is "conspiring" (i.e. planning together) to commit a crime. I believe it falls under pre-meditation if it's a single person.

It takes two or more people to conspire to commit a crime.
