Waxing means getting bigger. Waning means getting smaller. A crescent Moon is just a sliver, all the way to half, then as it gets bigger, it becomes a gibbous moon, until it is full.

So a waxing crescent is a crescent moon that is getting larger (i.e., moving towards full moon).
